BRUSSELS -- The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is holding a major conference on immigration and the role of civil society in promoting integration in Brussels on Monday.

The aim of the two-day event is to involve the social partners and civil society organizations in promoting the integration of immigrants and refugees into European society, IRNA quoted according to an EESC press release.

The conference will focus on three main topics: Work and labor relations; social integration policies; and citizenship and political rights of immigrants in Europe.

Representatives of 100 civil society organizations from European countries, many of which deal directly with the integration of immigrants, as well as European and international organizations dealing with immigration and asylum issues, including the Red Cross, the UNHCR and Amnesty International, are expected to participate.

Keynote speeches will be delivered by Antonio Vitorino, EU commissioner for justice and internal affairs, and Bertel Haarder, for European affairs, among others.
